Why Our Classes Are Full Body at The Barn KT9

There are a million ways to structure a workout routine, and if you’ve ever ventured into the black hole of internet fitness advice, you’ve probably come out the other side more confused. Upper/lower splits, push/pull/legs, bro-splits, HIIT—it’s enough to want to lie down and hope your glutes will activate themselves.

At The Barn KT9, we like to keep things simple. That’s why all our classes are full-body workouts. Every. Single. Time.

Why?

Because full-body training is one of the most effective and efficient ways to build strength, improve fitness, and ensure you don’t wake up one day with the upper body of a Greek god and the legs of a retired flamingo.

The Science Behind Full-Body Workouts

1. Full-Body Workouts Are More Efficient

Firstly, split training has its place. If you’re a bodybuilder or athlete with unlimited time and an overwhelming desire to isolate your rear delts every Wednesday, then split training might be for you.

But for us mere mortals? Full-body training is more practical. Studies show that training all major muscle groups in one session allows for more efficient time use while still promoting similar strength and muscle gains to split routines (Evangelista et al., 2021).

Simply put: if you can only commit to training 2-3 times per week, full-body workouts ensure you hit all your muscle groups enough times to make real progress. Miss leg day in a split routine? You just skipped 50% of your muscle groups. Miss a session in a full-body programme? No biggie, you’ll train everything again in the next one.

2. Greater Fat Loss Potential

If you’re training for health, then full-body workouts also offer an edge over split-body routines. This is because they activate more muscle mass per session, leading to higher calorie burn and greater post-exercise oxygen consumption (Carneiro et al., 2024).

In a randomised trial, trained participants who followed a full-body resistance training routine lost significantly more fat compared to those following a split-body plan—even though the total weekly workout volume was the same.

In other words, if fat loss is part of your goal, you’re better off doing a session that involves lifting, pressing, pulling, and squatting your way through multiple muscle groups rather than perfecting the art of single-joint movements.

3. Better Recovery & Less DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)

Nothing says “bad planning” like smashing your quads so hard in a session that you have to descend the stairs like a crab for the next four days. The downside of split training is that it can cause more severe localised soreness and fatigue, potentially leading to longer recovery times and even reduced physical activity throughout the day (Carneiro et al., 2024).

Full-body workouts, on the other hand, distribute the workload across the entire body, allowing for shorter recovery times and ensuring one part of your body isn’t completely ruined for your next session.

Who Should Do Full-Body Workouts?

Short answer: everyone.

But more specifically:

  • Beginners: If you’re just starting, full-body workouts are ideal because they allow you to train each muscle group multiple times per week while still giving your body time to recover (Pedersen et al., 2022)

  • Busy people: If you’re someone who wants to train but doesn’t have time to live in the gym, full-body workouts ensure you get maximum results in minimal sessions.

  • People who like being able to wash their hair after an arm workout.

How We Structure Full-Body Workouts at The Barn KT9

Our classes at The Barn KT9 are designed with progression, variety, and movement quality in mind.

Sessions includes:

Big compound lifts – squats, deadlifts, rows, and presses to work multiple muscles at once.

Accessory work – targeted exercises to address imbalances and injury prevention.

Core and stability work – because a strong core means a stronger everything else.

A solid finisher – a metabolic push to get your heart rate up and leave you feeling accomplished.
